Though the battle is usually forgotten – chalked up to an American defeat and little more – it was a critical moment in the war and New York City history. Battle of Long Island, engraving, , from painting by Alonzo Chappel. The British fleet set sail in June with plans to station its giant naval force on Staten Island. A few days after the British began landing on Staten Island, word reached New York that Congress had voted for independence.
Upon hearing the news, a mob of patriots tore down the gilded lead statue of King George III in Bowling Green, mounted the head of the statue on a spike outside a tavern, and turned the rest into musket balls. In the coming months, this same passion defined the defense of New York City and Brooklyn. He began efforts to fortify the city before the British fleet sailed into New York Harbor, and these intensified during the summer of Fortifying Governors Island, located in the middle of the harbor, was one of his major efforts.
He considered it “a very important post” because control of the island dictated control of the mouth of the East River. Essentially, Governors Island was integral to defending the entire east side of Manhattan as well as Brooklyn Heights. And so, Putnam seized the island with 1, men and constructed an earthen works fort roughly where Fort Jay is located today.

Here are our favorites in the city, and note that no, it is not a coincidence that most of these are in Murray Hill, the East Village, or Williamsburg, now the Murray Hill of Brooklyn. You may ask what is a gannet? It’s a sea bird larger than the largest gull with a large wingspan, that circle high in the sky and dive bombs into the water with a terrific splash. They are the first indicators that herring are present along the beaches and making their way into the inlets and bays of the Long Island region. The Atlantic Herring Clupa harengus harengus and the blueback herring Alosa aestivalis are the main angling attraction for those plying the planks of local docks and piers during the winter season.
However, they are also the main culprits sought, when late season bass anglers are looking for cow linesiders! These ocean running fish storm into our inlets just about the time bass are ready to leave and as you can imagine, this is not a very good scenario as far as the well being of the herring is concerned.

We used two different metrics to determine which antenna performed best. The first was a raw measure of the number of channels it could detect, while the second involved a number of predetermined “problem channels”. For these we consulted a list of channels culled from various forums, for both testing areas, and gauged how well the antennas pulled in each channel. While the results will vary depending on where you live, we found that, for example, the extra couple of channels the best models received were generally radio broadcasts and further Spanish language offerings.
Most of the antennas are based around the same rectangular design, but there was one important consideration: Did the antenna have a long cable, or even better, a detachable one? You’ll be sticking one of these in your window and it’s likely a long way from your TV, so longer is better. Installing an indoor antenna While the Eclipse included adhesives in the pack most of these antennas didn’t.
As a result you’ll need some good adhesive to hold these on your window or wall. We first tried gaffer tape, and while it worked it left greasy marks on the window. Masking tape wasn’t very effective at holding the antenna up. Try packing tape or poster putty instead. Larger antennas such as the Smartenna will need to be screwed onto a wall and come with keyhole slots in the back for this.

On Long Island, where campgrounds offer oceanside views, hiking trails, historic landmarks, and lighthouses, experienced camping families or first-timers can enjoy roasting hot dogs and marshmallows, making shadow animals on tent walls, chasing after fireflies, and otherwise celebrating nature.
Each natural land feature originated through the action of some past or present geologic process. On Long Island these processes can be grouped into three categories – pre-glacial , glacial and post-glacial , depending on whether they occurred before, during or after the advance of a continental glacier onto the Island. Pre-Glacial Pre-glacial geologic events in the Long Island include the formation of the ancient over million year old metamorphic bedrock that forms the foundation upon which Long Island rests, and the deposition of sands and clays on this bedrock 70 million years ago, during the late Cretaceous period.
Surface exposures of the bedrock are widespread in Manhattan and the Bronx but are limited on Long Island to small outcrops in northwestern Queens. The bedrock slopes down to the south and east beneath the rest of Long Island and therefore does not form any significant landforms here. Resting on the bedrock and extending under nearly all of Long Island is a massive wedge of Cretaceous sediments sands, clays and gravels.
This wedge is over 2, feet thick under Fire Island, but it thins towards the north shore and the western end of the Island to pinch out under Long Island’s Sound, western Queens and Brooklyn. The top surface of the Cretaceous reaches elevations above sea level over an extensive area of northern Nassau and northwestern Suffolk counties. The figure below shows the areas above sea level as they might appear if they had not been covered by the younger glacial deposits.
However, because of the glacial cover, exposed Cretaceous sediments are limited to a few scattered localities on present day Long Island. The Cretaceous, therefore, is an important, but little visible, contributor to Long Island’s topography. Glacial The geologic event that most greatly affected the land surface of Long Island was the advance of a massive continental glacier into this region during the Wisconsin stage of the Pleistocene Epoch.
The Ronkonkoma and the later Harbor Hill are two sub-stages, or positions, of this ice sheet which occurred on Long Island. The accumulation of rock debris along these two stationary melting fronts formed two prominent ridges called terminal moraines.
